3 Minute Marketplace | Week of 28 September 2026
This week brings a new EU compliance label on eBay, a big set of seller tool updates from Etsy, some eye-opening Shopify data on how quickly sellers are turning trends into sales, and our first framework piece, designed to show you what you really make on every order. Here is what landed and why it matters.
This Week’s Framework: What You Really Make on Every Sale
Most marketplace sellers work out profit as the selling price minus what they paid for the product. Once fees, postage, packaging, advertising, returns and overheads are included, the real number is often far lower, and some best-sellers turn out to be barely profitable at all.
The True Profit Framework walks you through every cost step by step, then sorts your catalogue into Stars, Earners, Traps and Drags so you can see which products deserve your stock and advertising budget, and which ones are quietly draining your cash. If you only read one thing this week, make it this one.
eBay Introduces the GARAN Durability Guarantee Label for EU Sellers
From 27 September 2026, eBay will display a new GARAN label on eligible listings from business sellers targeting EU consumers. The label appears when a listing includes three item specifics together: a Durability Guarantee value, the Brand, and the Model.
The field is voluntary and should only be used where the producer genuinely offers a free durability guarantee of more than two years covering the whole product. Whether you list directly on eBay or through a third party tool, we have covered exactly what you need to do.
Etsy Launches a Major Round of New Seller Tools
Etsy’s latest Newly Crafted update includes shared access for team members, a clearer view of finances, faster shop stats, an expanded AI Stats assistant, new local search options, and listing appeals rolling out to all sellers by the end of 2026.
Read together, the updates show Etsy quietly professionalising its seller base and competing harder on data, while trying to protect the independent identity that built the brand. We look at what that means for sellers heading into the busiest trading period of the year.
Shopify Data Shows Sellers Now Turn Trends Into Sales in Hours
New Shopify research shows how quickly independent sellers are moving from idea to first sale, with some reaching their first order within a day of launching and others selling moment-driven products within an hour of a major news event.
The more useful insight for long-term sellers is that fast-moving trends like matcha and protein products did not burn out. They became lasting categories, and the sellers who moved early built positions that are still growing.
Link Lowdown
A collection of links to stuff I think are worth sharing.
Sellerboard — Profit analytics for Amazon sellers that pulls in fees, refunds, advertising and product costs automatically, so you can see real profit per product rather than just revenue. A natural next step after reading this week’s framework.
A2X — Connects Amazon, eBay, Etsy and Shopify payouts to accounting software like Xero and QuickBooks, breaking each payout into sales, fees and refunds. Useful if your bookkeeping currently involves a lot of guesswork.
We will be back next week with more news, updates, and practical guidance for marketplace sellers.
