Gumtree Launches Pay and Collect: What Local Sellers Need to Know

Gumtree has introduced Pay and Collect, a new way for buyers to pay through the platform before picking up an item in person. The feature covers eligible For Sale listings priced under £250 and is designed to remove some of the most common frustrations of local selling, from no-show buyers to the awkwardness of handling cash or bank transfers with strangers.

How Pay and Collect Works

The process is straightforward. A buyer pays for the item through Gumtree, and the listing is immediately reserved for them so nobody else can buy it. The buyer and seller then agree a collection time using Gumtree's messaging. When the buyer arrives, they check the item in person, and if they are happy, they confirm the collection using a six-digit code from the Gumtree app. The payment is then released to the seller.

If the buyer is not happy with the item when they inspect it, the order can be cancelled and they receive a full refund.

What Sellers Need to Do

New eligible listings will be able to take online payment as the feature rolls out, and any orders placed this way can be managed directly from the seller's Gumtree account. Existing live listings are not switched over automatically, so sellers who want to offer Pay and Collect on items they have already listed will need to edit those listings and turn the option on once it becomes available to them.

Why This Matters for Sellers

For anyone who sells locally, the biggest benefit is commitment. A buyer who has already paid is far more likely to turn up than one who has simply sent a message saying they are interested, which should mean fewer wasted evenings waiting for collections that never happen. Sellers also avoid handling cash, and they get paid as soon as the buyer confirms they are happy.

There is a trade-off worth understanding. Because the buyer inspects the item before confirming, a sale is not truly complete until that code is entered. Accurate descriptions and honest photos matter more than ever, because any mismatch between the listing and the real item gives the buyer an easy route to cancel at the door.

The Bigger Picture

This move puts Gumtree in a stronger position against rivals in local and second-hand selling, particularly Facebook Marketplace, where payment and trust are often handled informally between buyers and sellers. Building secure payment into the collection process makes Gumtree feel safer for buyers, and safer platforms tend to attract more of them.

It also reflects a wider trend across marketplaces. Platforms are increasingly stepping into the middle of transactions to provide trust, protection and payment handling, whether that is eBay's Authenticity Guarantee, eBay International Shipping, or now Gumtree's Pay and Collect. For sellers, that usually means more confident buyers, but also more of the transaction happening on the platform's terms.

For local sellers, and for business sellers who deal in bulky or collection-only items, Pay and Collect is worth switching on once it reaches your account, particularly for items where no-shows have been a recurring problem.
