eBay Updates Unpaid Item Policy: What UK Sellers Need to Know
eBay has updated its unpaid item policy for UK sellers, setting out clear rules on what happens when a buyer commits to a purchase but fails to pay, and the steps sellers can take to protect themselves when that happens.
What the Policy Says
Buyers on eBay are required to pay for items within four calendar days of committing to a purchase, whether that is by winning an auction, agreeing to an offer, or selecting Buy It Now on a listing. If payment is not received within that timeframe, the seller can cancel the order and an unpaid cancellation will be recorded on the buyer's account.
For eBay Live auctions specifically, the rules are stricter. Immediate payment is required, and if a buyer's payment is unsuccessful the seller can cancel the order immediately without waiting for the four-day window to pass.
Failure to pay for an item is treated as a violation of eBay's abusive buyer policy, and buyers who accumulate excessive unpaid cancellations on their account may have buying limits or restrictions imposed on their account and any linked accounts.
What Sellers Can Do
Sellers can cancel an order for non-payment from four calendar days after the order is placed and up to 30 days after the original order date. When a seller cancels an order due to non-payment, eBay will automatically remove any feedback the non-paying buyer left on the seller's account, giving sellers protection against retaliatory feedback from buyers who did not complete their purchase.
It is important that sellers only use the non-payment cancellation reason when a buyer has genuinely not paid. Using the reason incorrectly, for example applying it when the buyer has actually paid, can result in all fee credits being reversed for the relevant time period, the loss of access to the fee credit system, and in serious cases account suspension.
Why eBay Has This Policy
The policy is designed to protect sellers from the operational and commercial disruption caused by buyers who commit to a purchase and then do not follow through, while maintaining a fair and trustworthy environment for the wider marketplace. For sellers, understanding the four-day window and the cancellation process clearly means being better placed to manage non-paying buyers promptly and recover stock for relisting without unnecessary delay.
