eBay Launches UK Trading Card Authentication From May 2026
eBay has announced the launch of its Authenticity Guarantee service for trading cards in the UK, making it the first online marketplace in the country to make authentication the standard for qualifying purchases rather than an optional extra.
The service began rolling out from 6 May 2026 for eligible trading cards priced at £500 and above, covering collectable card games including Pokémon, sports trading cards, and non-sports cards. All trading cards in that price bracket are expected to be included by June, with eligibility expanding throughout the rollout period.
How the Authentication Process Works
When a service-eligible trading card is purchased, the seller ships it directly to eBay's authentication facility, where it undergoes a comprehensive multi-point physical inspection carried out by Professional Sports Authenticator, eBay's partner for the service. Authenticators use an extensive database to assess the card's condition and quality, verifying authenticity and ensuring the card matches the listing description.
Following the inspection, a tamper-evident e-tag featuring a unique QR code is attached to the card's protective packaging, preserving the condition of the card itself and allowing buyers to scan the code to view full details about the card and its authentication journey. The authenticated card is then shipped via tracked, next-day delivery to the buyer.
For sellers who offer returns, eBay has introduced a verified returns process that ensures the exact item is returned to the authentication centre, where experts confirm condition and authenticity before the card is returned to the seller.
eBay Live Integration
In a significant extension of the service, eBay's Authenticity Guarantee for trading cards will also apply to eligible purchases made through eBay Live, the platform's livestream selling feature. This means collectors buying high-value cards through live auctions will benefit from the same expert verification, secure handling, and post-purchase experience as buyers purchasing through standard marketplace listings, making eBay the only UK marketplace currently offering authentication at this level across both standard and live selling formats.
Eligible listings will display an Authenticity Guarantee blue badge, making it easy for buyers to identify authenticated items while browsing.

eBay's move reflects the continued strength of the trading card market in the UK, where collector interest spans a wide range of categories and price points. Pokémon cards including Charizard ex and Ancient Mew were among the most searched items on eBay UK in 2025, and the highest value trading card sold in the UK on the platform was a 1999 Pokemon 1st Edition Shadowless Charizard Base Set Holo Rare BGS 9 MINT, which sold for £16,500. Football leads the sports card category, with Arsenal being the top searched football club, and 2025 Formula 1 champion Lando Norris ranking as the most searched British athlete on the platform in 2025.
