eBay Acquires Depop from Etsy for $1.2 Billion in Strategic Gen Z Play

In a significant move that underscores the growing value of the resale economy, eBay has acquired Depop from Etsy for $1.2 billion in an all-cash deal. The secondhand fashion platform, which commands a loyal following of nearly seven million active buyers, 90% of whom are under 34, will retain its brand identity while gaining access to eBay's vast infrastructure and resources.

This acquisition represents a strategic bet on the future of recommerce, as eBay seeks to capture younger demographics who increasingly prioritize sustainable and affordable fashion alternatives over traditional retail channels.

The deal marks a swift reversal for Etsy, which purchased Depop just five years ago for $1.6 billion as part of an ambitious expansion strategy. Since then, Etsy has systematically divested several acquisitions, including Brazilian marketplace Elo7 and music equipment site Reverb, as it refocuses on its core handcrafted goods platform.

The company's shares surged over 15% following the announcement, suggesting investors approve of this strategic simplification. Meanwhile, for eBay, the acquisition bolsters one of its fastest-growing categories and positions the 30-year-old marketplace as a serious player in the fashion resale space, competing directly with platforms like Poshmark and Vinted.

This transaction highlights a broader shift in consumer behavior, particularly among Gen Z shoppers who are driving explosive growth in the "pre-loved" fashion market. As competition intensifies from fast-fashion disruptors like Shein and Temu, established marketplaces are recognizing that sustainable resale offers both differentiation and demographic appeal.

For operators and founders in the ecommerce space, the Depop acquisition serves as a reminder that building for specific audiences—in this case, sustainability-conscious younger consumers, creates genuine enterprise value.

The deal is expected to close by mid-2025, at which point Depop's three million active sellers will gain access to eBay's seller tools, logistics network, and global reach.
